About Our School PDF Print E-mail
Runcorn State High School is located in the southern suburbs of Brisbane and services the communities of Runcorn, Runcorn Heights, Sunnybank Hills, Kuraby, Algester, and parts of Logan City. It was established in 1986.

The school has a stable population of 1300 which consists of a small multicultural component. Students generally travel to the school by bus, car and train. About 30 students participate in programs offered in conjunction with the school's Special Education Unit for Hearing-Impaired and Speech Language Impaired students. The general demeanour of the student body is reported by those who visit the school, and by the school staff, as being of an excellent standard, as is the self-presentation of the students.

The school offers a curriculum program which is vertical from Years 8 to 12 and organised in semester-length units of work. A number of initiatives, such as the accelerated programs and the work of the Learning Support Group in targeting literacy in Year 8, have developed within the vertical structure to cater for the individual needs of the students.

The curriculum is supported by a comprehensive support structure of Year Coordinators and Course Coordinators, who help students and parents with their decision making about pathways through the curriculum. Students belong to a pastoral care group supported by a pastoral care teacher who generally stays with the group of students throughout their time at the school. Each of the pastoral care groups is allocated to one of the school's four houses. Other student support services include Guidance Officer, Chaplain, part-time Nurse and a school based youth support co-ordinator.

The range of subjects is wide and includes Authority and Authority Registered subjects. Students also have the opportunity to complete vocational education qualifications and participate in school-based apprenticeships and traineeships and structured work placement and work experience.
The school staff is experienced, with the majority having been at the school for a number of years. Over 60% are senior teachers. In addition to the formal subjects, there is a wide range of co-curricular activities in which students participate. These include both recreational and interschool sports, debating and public speaking, school musical productions, and instrumental music groups. The Runcorn Institute of Sport has been established at the school to provide access to specialist coaching in a range of sports - volleyball, basketball, soccer and touch football.

In October 2005 the school's unique e-Portal was launched. This allows students and their parents to access and submit course work using the internet.

Runcorn High School has already developed a reputation as a leading school in technology progress. It is our intention into the future to develop a showcase of design and technology education which will produce greater educational opportunities for our students and become a model for other schools. In line with this, a Design Hub is being constructed in 2007.
