What is a School-Based Apprenticeship/Traineeship?
-
A school-based apprenticeship/traineeship, allows students (Year 10 - 12) to do paid work in their chosen Apprenticeship or Traineeship area whilst still at school At the same time, students will undertake a training qualification with a registered training organisation (TAFE/college) chosen by both the employer and the student.
-
Students will learn on-the-job skills as they are in the workplace one day per week. Students are paid for the work completed in the workplace.
-
The training component is completed in times that are negotiated between the student and learning provider.
-
Traineeships cover areas such as retail, clerical, hospitality, information technology.
-
Apprenticeships cover areas such as construction, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and all other trades.

How Can Students Get Involved?
-
It is highly recommended that students access the Work Experience Program or Structured Workplace Learning before trying for a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship. This will enable a better understainding of the job requirements and will provide essential work experience background for your resume.
-
Vacancies for school-based apprenticeships/traineeships are updated weekly on the notice board outside the Student Services building and are regularly advertised in student notices. These lists can also be accessed by visiting www.scips.org.au.
-
Students who find a position that they would like to apply for, are required to hand in a resume and a covering letter to the SCIPS coordinator. The application will be given to the employer along with all the other students who are also applying.
