Runcorn State High School sporting program focuses on providing opportunities to participate in various sports throughout their high school study. Runcorn State High School is part of the Karawatha District, which is part of the Metropolitan West region. Students are eligible to gain selection for Queensland School’s Sport via selection to Metropolitan West region.

Besides students gaining selection to district or further honours in their chosen sport, Runcorn State High School gives students an opportunity to participate in the following statewide competitions throughout the year:

Students have the opportunity to participate in both Basketball Excellence and Touch Football Excellence Programs.

In year 9 and 10 students can participate in Basketball and Touch Excellence subjects as their elective choices.

In year 11 & 12 students can be selected in Basketball and Touch Football Excellence Academies run during Special Programs.

These courses allow students to develop their physical individual skills and team strategies and study numerous theory areas all specifically linked to basketball and touch football. Students are given opportunities to develop coaching and officiating skills and visit primary schools to practice these skills in real life situations. These students are eligible to make up inter-school sporting teams and participate in various competitions throughout the year.

This is of a very high standard.

Runcorn State High School is affiliated with the Metropolitan West School Sport region. Students are eligible to trial for Metropolitan West regional teams through selection in Karawatha Secondary (13-19 years) and Sunnybank Primary (12 years) district teams.

  • The record for Metropolitan Championships in one year is 7. The record belongs to the Runcorn “Blues”

Students are placed into one of the four sporting houses. The sporting houses are named after local historical identities who were pioneers of the Runcorn community. The house spirit is very strong at Runcorn State High School with students participating and competing in their house colours for the Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field Carnivals. The Runcorn PSE Day at end of Term 1 epitomises the strong house spirt as the houses challenge to be the best in house spirit via the House Spirit Challenge.

The success of Runcorn on the courts and the sporting field is recognised by the Runcorn Blues Sporting Hall of Fame and the Wall of Stars. The school has had many, many athletes who have excelled during and after schooling. The Hall of Fame celebrates their success.

The Criteria for the Hall of Fame:

  • the student would have been a player coached by Runcorn State High School staff and would have played for Runcorn State High School in their chosen sport for a number of years
  • the student would have represented the school in their chosen sport if the sport was available for the school to have a team
  • the student would have been enrolled at RSHS for at least three years
  • (preferably 5 years) and must have finished Year 12 at RSHS
  • the student, after school, would have progressed to national level
  • the student would preferably have established a significant career over time
  • the student would have played on an open national team (examples would be NRL, NBL, WNBL, Australian Volleyball, Australian Baseball, Australian Netball, etc)
  • the student would have embodied the “Pride Success Excellence” motto of Runcorn State High School
  • the student was a strong and positive role model to the members of all their teams during and after schooling and to the wider community as a representative of Runcorn State High School
